A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from non-public details of the event.
Market Movement in Predictions
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the hours before former President Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.
A single trader, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before News Break
Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet these probabilities had jumped to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a sharp shift in positions immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on inside information," stated an industry expert.
Several of other platform users also earned significant sums from similar wagers.
Political Attention Grows
Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.
A new rule put forward on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in recent years, with participants able to predict everything from sports to political events.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.
A company executive for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
