A recent study indicates that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these medications should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
