Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now won the season-opening cup on 14 different times.

Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the match between the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring early on.

Yet, the southern French side fired two times in the closing moments to take a shock advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before the defender unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial equaliser in the dying seconds to send the match into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a convincing penalty victory.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last thirteen years.
